An extension adds length beyond your natural free edge. The new tip is either sculpted over a temporary form or built on a pre-shaped tip bonded to your nail, then the whole thing is finished like any gel set. That is different from an overlay, which adds a strengthening layer over your natural nail at its natural length. More on that choice in a moment, because at yeux they are priced very differently.

Acrylic is the oldest system: a liquid monomer mixed with powder that hardens in air. It is the hardest wearing and often the cheapest, but it sits thicker, the monomer has a strong smell, and both application and removal ask more of your natural nail. Hard gel is a thick builder gel cured under an LED lamp. It flexes more naturally than acrylic, but most hard gels cannot be soaked off and have to be filed away. Soft gel, the gel-X style of full-cover tips, is the newest of the three: a light pre-shaped tip bonded with gel and cured under the lamp. It feels the lightest on the hand, needs the least filing of your natural plate, and dissolves in an acetone soak when you are done with it.

If your priority is your natural nails, the dermatologists agree with the soft-gel direction: the American Academy of Dermatology suggests choosing gel nails over acrylics, since gel is more flexible so your own nails are less likely to crack, and specifically recommends asking for gel that soaks off rather than gel that must be filed off. The two add-ons solve different problems. An overlay (+$20) keeps your natural length and adds a structured layer of gel for strength, for nails that are long enough but bend, peel or snap. An extension (+$80) adds length you do not have. If you are growing out a broken nail or your nails simply refuse to pass the fingertip, extension. If your nails grow fine and just will not survive the week, overlay is the cheaper, honest answer, and we will say so at the chair.

Almond and oval are the most requested shapes at yeux and the most forgiving: no corners to catch on knitwear or hair. Square and coffin look sharp but chip at the corners first. On length, be honest about your days. A short-to-medium extension types, cooks and carries groceries without a second thought; a long stiletto set means learning to pick up coins with the pads of your fingers. If it is your first set, go one size shorter than the photo you brought in. You can always go longer next month.

How long a set lasts: infill or redo

A well-applied set wears three to four weeks. By week three the regrowth gap at the cuticle shows regardless of system, which is when most clients rebook. What happens at that visit depends on the system: acrylic and hard gel are usually infilled every two to three weeks, filling the gap and rebalancing the structure. Soft-gel tip sets are normally soaked off and replaced as a fresh set, which suits the three-to-four-week rhythm and means your natural nail gets checked bare every cycle. If an edge lifts early, come in; water trapped under a lifted extension is how bigger problems start.

Mostly, no, and the damage that does happen rarely comes from wearing them. It comes from how they go on and, above all, how they come off. The AAD notes that filing the natural nail surface rough enough for acrylic to grip thins the plate and weakens it, which is one reason soft gel, with its minimal prep, is the gentler route. On the way off, the two killers are peeling and drilling: ripping a bored corner off at your desk takes the top layers of nail with it, and an e-file run down to the bare plate does the same damage in a salon chair. A patient acetone soak-off avoids both. At yeux, removal is always a soak-off, never drilled, and it is free for any set we applied.

- An acrylic smell that stings your eyes. All acrylic monomer smells, but in our experience an unusually harsh, lingering smell on a very cheap set is the sign to ask what liquid is being used, and to walk if the answer is vague. Do not use the new length as a tool; parcel tape and drink cans are what tips crack on. And when something lifts or chips, book the soak-off instead of picking at it.
