The technique has been quietly practised across Taiwan, southern China and South-East Asia for generations, but in Singapore it's having a moment — particularly among working women between 28 and 55 who are tired of jaw clenching, tired of sinus pressure, and tired of facials that just felt like nice product applications.

This guide is the explainer I wish existed when our first Bo Jin clients started asking what to tell their friends. It's written by QunQun, who has practised the technique daily since 2020.
What is Bo Jin, exactly?
拨筋到底是什么?
Bo Jin (拨筋) literally translates as "plucking the meridians." It is a traditional Chinese facial technique that uses a smooth, hand-shaped bone tool to trace the meridian channels of the face — releasing fascial tension, encouraging lymphatic drainage, and reorganising the soft tissue around the jaw, sinus, eye socket and cheekbone.
It is not a massage. It is not microcurrent. It is not a Western facial. The closest English-language analogy is something like physiotherapy for the face, with a few hours of cosmetic afterglow built in.
它不是按摩、不是微电流、不是西式面部护理。最接近的形容是「脸部物理治疗」,外加几小时的美容发光感。

The bone tool — and why it isn't gua sha

This is the question we get most often. They look related; they are not the same.
这是我们最常被问的问题。看起来像,但完全不一样。
- Gua sha刮痧 uses a flat or curved stone石头 tool — most commonly jade or rose quartz — and works primarily on the surface of the skin and superficial fascia. The strokes are usually long and gliding. The intention is detoxification and surface circulation.
- Bo Jin拨筋 uses a hand-carved, ergonomically curved bone骨头 tool. The technique works much deeper — along defined meridian lines, with localised pressure on specific points where fascia tends to bind. The strokes are shorter, more deliberate, more forensic.
Both techniques have a place. They are not competing. But Bo Jin is the one that releases jaw tension you didn't know you were carrying.

The 8 facial meridians we work

Every Bo Jin session at yeux follows the same anatomical sequence. The tool moves through eight major channels:

- Forehead (frontal)额头 — releases the small clenching pattern most people hold while working at a screen.
- Eye socket (orbital ring)眼眶 — gentle decongestion of the under-eye lymphatic basin.
- Sinus channels鼻窦经络 — clears pressure across the maxillary and frontal sinuses, particularly useful during haze season or post-flu.
- Cheekbone (zygomatic ridge)颧骨 — restores cheekbone definition that gets blurred by puffiness.
- Jawline (mandibular)下颌线 — the jaw is where most of our regulars feel the biggest shift.
- Masseter咬肌 — for clients who clench, grind, or do a lot of speaking. This is the muscle Botox practitioners often target; Bo Jin releases it without injection.
- Neck (cervical)颈部 — only included in the 90-minute Ritual session.
- Scalp ridge (occipital)头皮脊(枕骨) — also Ritual-only. Releases tension that radiates up from the shoulders.

What happens at your first session

Your first Bo Jin at yeux is structured in four phases. The whole appointment is 60 minutes, and you should expect to leave with a noticeable change.

Phase 1 — Bilingual consultation (5 minutes)

We talk about your sleep, stress, jaw clenching, sinus history, and any recent injectables or skincare actives. You can have this conversation in English, Mandarin, Singlish, or any combination. We're listening for tension patterns before we touch the face.

Phase 2 — Warm cleanse (8 minutes)

A double cleanse with a warm towel, then a jojoba-based slip balm to prepare the skin. We don't exfoliate on session day — the goal is to keep the skin barrier calm.

Phase 3 — Meridian release (40 minutes)

The main event. The tool moves through the eight channels in sequence. We check pressure at minutes 5, 20 and 40. Most clients describe the sensation as "deeply satisfying pressure" — not pain. Along stubborn jaw knots you may feel firmness, but the pressure is yours to dial up or down.

Phase 4 — Close and advise (7 minutes)

Two timelines, depending on what you're solving for:

- Visible jawline lift and tension release:下颌线明显提升 + 紧绷释放: every 2 to 3 weeks. The fascial release "memory" lasts roughly that long before tension rebuilds.
- Seasonal sinus relief:季节性鼻窦缓解: every 4 to 6 weeks is usually enough. We see a spike in bookings during haze season and post-flu seasons in Singapore.

Bo Jin in Singapore — and at yeux specifically

The technique itself isn't unique to us. What is unique is how we structure the session: bilingual, single-chair (so you're never overlapped), with the same practitioner every visit. Continuity matters in Bo Jin because the practitioner builds a memory of your specific tension patterns.

If you live anywhere in the north-east — Hougang, Kovan, Sengkang, Buangkok, Punggol, Serangoon — our main studio at 703 Hougang Ave 2 is a 10–15 minute drive. If you work in town, the Bugis branch (inside DE salon, 243 Victoria Street) is a 4-minute walk from Bugis MRT and good for lunchtime appointments.

Aftercare — the 24 hours that matter

Treat your skin gently for the rest of the day. Specifically:
当天剩下的时间皮肤要温柔对待。具体:
- Wait 4–6 hours before makeup. The pores are primed for hydration, not a foundation top-up.
- 等 4 到 6 小时再化妆。毛孔在吸水,不是吸粉底。
- Drink water steadily — your lymphatic system is processing.
- 持续喝水 — 淋巴系统在工作。
- Skip the sauna, hot yoga, and aggressive workouts for 24 hours.
- 桑拿、热瑜伽、激烈运动 24 小时内别做。
- Avoid actives (retinol, AHA, BHA) for 48 hours.

- If you flush pink for an hour, that's normal. Real bruising is rare.
